setting a start point for a journey (Navman510 or Avic-x1r)

Greetings.
This may sound daft but can someone tell me how to set a start point for a
journey, now before anyone tells me the start point is where I am now I am in
Jersey, and I cannot start a route and check/plan it until I hit a ferry port
on the mainland.
I want to plan a route, check it, and alter it if required now not on a
motorway layby/
We have two systems
AVIC-X1R and Navman 510 in different cars.

Any help gratefully received.

Bob, with the Navman in 2D mode scroll the map by dragging it with the pen
to show the area you want as a start point, then use the +/- keys to enlarge
the area then tap on the start point to get the square box to appear then
tap again to bring up the options menu and select the option which says Set
as Start point.
